Union History
Union County was named after the Old Union Church built in 1765. Scottish-Irish settlers moving from Virginia and Pennsylvania moved to the Union area starting in the 1750’s.
Union County hosted a few Revolutionary War battles including Musgrove’s Mill on August 18, 1780 and the Battle of Blackstock on November 20, 1780, so it is rich in United States history, and a great place to visit for those interested in learning more about U.S. history.
There are more than 100 churches in the area, and opportunities to get involved with Civic clubs, and support others in the area including those who need assistance, as well as work with people of all ages.
The City of Union council is made of six council members from six council districts, and a mayor, all elected for a four year staggered office term. The City Council makes policies and organizes city services using ordinances, resolutions and motions. Meetings are the third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 pm in the Municipal Complex at 101 Sharpe Avenue. The City Administrator recommends policies and enforces the City Council policies.
You can find the Mayor’s office, and other official government employee offices on the first floor of the city municipal building at 101 Sharpe Avenue. Other departments are the city’s Planning Department which is downstairs at City Hall and the Public Safety Department which is located at 215 Thompson Boulevard.
