Elgin History:
Elgin was established in 1899 as the Seaboard Coastline Railroad was set up across the South Carolina midlands. The first town along the railroad was incorporated January 23, 1908 and named “Blaney” after a New York banker who was a Vice President of the railroad and one of the main reasons the railroad was funded.
1961 saw a period of growth as the State Senator and Blaney Town Attorney John West worked with Governor Fritz Hollings, and the management of the Elgin National Watch Company of Elgin, Illinois to match large land in Elgin with the labor market.
This was when the town name was changed from Blaney to Elgin.
They created a plant in 1963 and gave over 200 jobs to people, with the majority of workers women. Shortly after in 1967 the company ceased operations due to competition from foreign watch makers.
The old Blaney name still remains in some schools, churches, and fire departments including Blaney Elementary School, Blaney Baptist Church, and Blaney Fire Department.
